Trip Overview

Bumthang Owl trek is a 3 day trek from Menchugang to Tharpaling Dratsang that is situated above the Chumey valley. This trek has numerous highlights including Mount Gangkar Phuensum, high mountain views, Dhur village, exotic flora and fauna like Himalayan Tragopan(endangered).

Bumthang Owl is a complete place in itself. If you happen to visit just Bumthang, then you can say you have seen roughly half of Bhutan. It is a place with breathtaking beauty, landscapes, cool environment. It is also the centre of Bhutanese Art, Culture and religion. Bumthang Owl trek has it all from sacred caves to religious sites, traditional art and peaceful environment despite being the most populated city of Bhutan.

The peak season for this trek is between April to june. It derives it name from the sound of owl’s howling that trekkers hear on their first night of this trek. Bumthang Owl trek is a 3 day trek from Menchugang to Tharpaling Dratsang that is situated above the Chumey valley. Outline Iteinerary

Day 1:
We will start our journey from Menchugang and travel to Dhur the duration of this trek is around 4-5 hours depending upon the weather and your pace. The total distance that you cover on day 1 is 7 kilometers.
The inhabitants of Khur are basically nomads with two differents languages Bumthangkha and Brokke.
Occupation of the people is agriculture. Bhutanese government has tried to preserve them in their natural habitat.
The campsite is at 3450m in Juniper forest.

Day 2:
We move further uphill from Dhur towards Kitiphu. The duration of this trek is around 4-5 hours depending upon the weather and your pace. The total distance that you cover on day 2 is 8 kilometers.
The trek goes through hemlock forest which hosts a wide variety of flora and fauna.
You also cross Drangela Pass on the way to your next campsite at Kitiphu ridge at 3870m. From the camp you get an awesome view of Mt. Gangkar Phuensum(7541m), also the highest unreached peak.

Day 3:

On the last day of our trek we descend from KItiphu towards Kikila witnessing numerous monasteries of Chuedak and Zambhalha. You can also pay your regards at Chukchizhey or the 11 heads.

The duration of this trek is around 4-5 hours depending upon the weather and your pace. The total distance that you cover on day 3 is 7 kilometers.

Towards the end of your trek you walk on the Kikila’s ridge on the traditional trek route to Bumthang (the Royal Heritage Trail). Where your trek ends at Jakar Dzong aka the fortress of the white bird.

Price Details

The Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB), Tourism Business regulating agency of the Royal Government of Bhutan, fixes the Tourist Tariff rate. This rate is valid for all the inclusive tour packages. The tariffs for tourists visiting in a group of 3 persons or more are as follows:

Peak Season Rate: (March, April, May, September, October and November) Cultural Tour /Trekking – US$ 250/per person per night halt.

Low Season Rate:(January, February, June, July, August and December) Cultural Tour /Trekking- US$ 200/per person per night halt.
